Walkers at the stone cairn on the Mount Tassie lookout, with views over the ranges

Wild Magazine feature artefact by Craig Pearce – April 2023

Track Chat stories are written by walkers and describe the track as it was at the time. Conditions change, so check the current track conditions before you go.

Writer and photographer Craig Pearce walked the Grand Strzelecki Track for Wild magazine. His feature, published on the Wild website in April 2023, takes in all three loops: the Tarra Valley Loop on a 37-degree afternoon, the Mount Tassie Loop on a misty morning, and parts of the Macks Creek Loop together with the short walks around the Corrigan Suspension Bridge.

Craig made contact with us in October 2021 advising he was commissioned by Wild Magazine to write this artefact and finally ventured onto the Track in January 2022 once he had up to date and relevant information and advice. His artefact has now been released on the Wild Magazine website.

What Craig writes about

Craig describes the rainforest of Tarra-Bulga National Park, Cyathea Falls, Diaper Track and the Duff Sawmill Heritage Trail, the lyrebirds and swamp wallabies he met, and a wombat that wandered along with him for a while. He took the tree ferns away as his lasting memory of the track. He also shares his own views on how the track is looked after and funded.

I was captured, pinioned, transfixed by this jungle of rampant wild.
